1. Use sweet Almond oil

Sweet almond oil is hypoallergenic and contains the goodness of vitamin E and A which keeps the lips hydrated. It has been proven to improve complexion and skin tone, and further studies suggest that almond oil works great in reducing scars on the lips.

Take a drop or two on your finger and massage gently on your lips until it gets absorbed. Use it as lip balm underneath your lips, day and before bedtime for baby-soft lips.

2. Glycerin as a Night Treatment for Pigmented Lips

Glycerin has humectant properties that moisturize lips for a longer duration. However, make it a point to mix the glycerin with a carrier oil or a water solution as it’s not recommended to use alone.

Make the mixture of Glycerin and Lemon Juice and apply the mixture on your lips (or even on your face!) every night, before you hit the bed. In the next morning itself, you’ll see a result. You can also apply glycerin on your lips before applying the lipstick to combat the risk of harmful chemicals.

3. Aloe Vera Gel and Coconut Oil

Aloe Vera is filled with vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignin, saponins, salicylic acids, and amino acids. It is basically filled with anti-oxidants and fatty acids which work as a great lip emollient (source).

Coconut oil is a natural antibacterial and antifungal and contains essential fatty acids. It’s debatable whether it’s good for facial skin but for lips, it’s a great moisturizer.

Mix Aloe Vera Gel with Coconut oil and apply the mixture as a lip pack twice a week. Both ingredients being rich in moisturization can help you get rid of dark lips.

4.  Massage your lips with Beetroot

Antioxidant properties of beetroot make it a great veggie for eating as well as application on the skin. Beetroot removes the tanning on the lips and makes them look pink naturally.

Refrigerate a beetroot slice for 10 minutes before using it. Once it is cooled, rub the piece gently on your lips for good 5-8 minutes. You’ll see a red stain on the lips, let it stay for 15 minutes and then wash off with water. Apply your favorite lip balm after using this natural remedy to get rid of dark lips.

5. Use DIY Lip Scrub Once a Week

If you’d like to make a lip scrub yourself then here’s a DIY you’ll love.

Take sugar, honey, lemon juice, and olive oil and mix them. Exfoliate your lips once a week with this DIY lip scrub solution for 10 minutes. Regular use of this homemade lip scrub will reduce your lip pigmentation.

If you don’t have time for a DIY lip scrub, you can try Bliscent Lip Scrub. I use this lip scrub on my lips once a week. It’s made of natural and organic ingredients which makes it a safe lip balm to use on the lips.  You may check it out on Nykaa or Bliscent website. Another natural lip scrub I used was Aroma Essentials Lip Scrub. You can also use a baby toothbrush to exfoliate your lips lightly.

6. Use a Good SPF Lip Balm

Whenever I step out of the house, I always apply a lip balm with SPF. A common culprit of lip darkening might be the harmful UV sun rays, so use a lip balm that offers sun protection.  I use Maybelline Baby Lips Bright Out Loud lip balm which has SPF 13 and Maybelline Baby Lips Spiced Up Lip Balm which has SPF 20. I use these lip balms underneath my lipstick to protect them from sun damage.

7. Potato Juice to Get Rid of Dark Lips

Potatoes contain “catecholase,” a natural enzyme that is best known for reducing skin and lip darkening (source).

Grind potato in a blender and extract its juice. Use this juice on your lips as a lip mask and let it sit for 20 minutes. Wash it with cold water and apply a nice lip balm afterward.

8. Apply fresh fruit purees

You can use purees of your favorite fruits like banana, watermelon, pineapple, strawberry, mango on your lips as lip masks. Keep them on your lips for a few minutes and then rinse off. They’re so delicious you can eat them as well!

9. Milk Cream and Turmeric

This is an ancient, tried and tested remedy to get rid of dark lips. As you already know milk cream is a natural moisturizer and lip softener. It’s a boon for dehydrated and pigmented skin.

Turmeric exhibits anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-neoplastic properties. It contains an active component called curcumin which provides therapeutic benefits for skin health (source).

Take a tablespoon of milk cream and mix it with a pinch of turmeric powder or even better, organic fresh turmeric. Apply it as an overnight lip treatment and witness rosy soft lips in the morning.

10. Use Ice Cubes in Lips

This is the most straightforward and quick home remedy to get rid of dark lips. Take an ice cube covered in a thin cloth) and massage it on lips for 2-3 minutes.

You can also make ice cubes out of cucumber juice, potato juice, beetroot, watermelon juice to add that extra nourishment and anti-tanning effect to your lips.
