Recently, I started following a complete skincare routine. Instead of buying random products I could find, I started using recommended products that I actually needed. Some have been great, some not so much.

Summer or winter, the sun makes you tan. Lately, I’ve been on a mission to find tan removal options that actually work. So, I ordered Biotique Papaya Revitalizing Tan Removal Scrub. It’s quite famous here in the Indian market.

With its natural ingredients and claims of being suitable for all skin types, my curiosity got the better of me, and I tried it.

I have been using scrubs for a while, but I greatly like this one. How this scrub worked for me, know it all in this review.

About the product

This exfoliating scrub is blended with pure papaya fruit to dissolve dead surface cells, unclog pore openings, and smooth the way for clear skin to surface. Its gentle refining action uncovers skin’s natural brightness for a younger-looking complexion.

Other than its well-known tan removal scrub, Biotique is a well-established brand known for its extensive line of natural, Ayurvedic-inspired skincare products. I’ve tried its Bio Bhringraj Therapeutic Hair Oil and loved it!

Price: Starting from INR 75 for 50gm (also available in 75 g, 100 g, and 235 g sizes)

Is papaya effective in tan removal?

Papaya contains a special enzyme called papain that fights tans and it’s proven by research. Papain acts as a natural exfoliator, removing dead skin cells from the skin’s surface, even ones darkened by the sun (your tan).

What’s more, papayas are high in vitamin C, which boosts skin radiance. Vitamin C is also good in blocking melanin production, the pigment that causes tanning. This double action makes papaya a good choice for fading existing tans and preventing future ones, too.

Simply put, this fruit is like a natural skin brightener and exfoliator rolled into one. When you use a papaya scrub for tan removal, it helps your skin shed its tanned and darker outer layer, leaving it glowing and even.

How to use it?

Massage on wet face and neck with fingertips, avoiding the eye area. Gently wash off with water or a damp washcloth. Use daily or as needed.

My Experience with Biotique Papaya Revitalizing Tan Removal Scrub

The scrub comes in a vibrant orange squeeze tube (the bigger ones come in a tub) with a green flip cap. The tube reminds you so much of an actual papaya with the orange and green. I find it so adorable, and it’s travel-friendly, too!

The squeeze tube, however, makes it difficult to use when the product is near its end. Next time, I’ll probably get the tub one. Most people prefer the tube because it’s hygienic. However, as long as I wash my hands well before I use the product, I don’t find this a problem.

Off-white in color, the scrub has a thick, creamy formula with black exfoliating granules. The formula is very easy to work with and has a silky luxurious feel.

The fragrance is mild, which I found quite fine. It isn’t too strong or overwhelming.

Using it is a pleasure, and I spend more time exfoliating now, too! Looks like you’re spreading out a face pack. I love this aspect of the scrub the most. It’s not just beads you’re pushing around—you feel like you’re pampering yourself.

Also, I find that I need only a pea-sized amount. With just a little product, I can cover my whole face.

My last scrub had tiny granules. I feared this one would be harsh on my skin because it had round, large beads. But I didn’t have any such problems, probably because of the creamy formula. The large particles really exfoliate your skin, and it feels baby-soft. The effect doesn’t last too long, maybe 2-3 days, after which I use the scrub again. But still, it is good to have a scrub that’s gentle enough to use anytime a week.

I use it 2-3 times a week. Some people scrub their faces every day, and I did that once. Later, I found it’s better just to exfoliate once or twice a week. According to directions, you can use it as often as you need, so use it according to your skin type.

In general, dermatologists recommend exfoliating once or twice a week. Maybe one or two times more if you have oily skin, but don’t do it too much, or you’ll strip your skin of its natural oils. One to two times a week is enough for dry, sensitive skin. More than that, it can irritate and dry your skin out.

After buffing away all the dead skin, the skin feels soft. My face feels smooth to touch. It definitely does a good job of exfoliating.

Even though I’m not very tanned, it removed any little tan I had. But most importantly, my skin feels bright and glowing afterward. Plus, it’s not drying.

Bottom line, I like the way my skin feels after the scrub. As soon as I’m done exfoliating, I put on some moisturizer to nourish my skin.

Who should use this scrub?

Biotique Papaya Revitalizing Tan Removal Scrub is ideal for normal, oily, or combination skin types since it exfoliates gently without stripping natural oils. This scrub is also helpful if your skin is uneven, dull, or mildly hyperpigmented.

Who should avoid this scrub?

I wouldn’t recommend it much if you have very sensitive or acne-prone skin. The scrub’s grainy texture might be effective for exfoliation, but it might be too abrasive for someone with sensitive skin.

Also, those with active skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis should speak with a dermatologist before adding this product to their skincare routine.

If you still want to try it, patch test on a small area of skin first before full application, especially if you’re unsure about your skin’s tolerance.

Final Word

Overall, I really liked this scrub. Its gentle exfoliation left my skin soft, smooth, and radiant. My little tan also went away. I am particularly fond of the creamy formula which makes it soooo great to massage on my skin. While the results might not be so long-lasting, it’s affordable and easy to use, especially if you have normal to combination skin. It’s budget-friendly too. For those with sensitive skin, do a patch test first before using it on your full face.
