Blemishes can simply be defined as discolored outbursts or patches or marks on the skin, generally appearing due to the occurrence of acne. Blemishes can be of many types and their occurrence can depend on a lot many reasons ranging from the ones that are there with you since birth or the ones that appear on the skin over a period of time due to various environmental, medical or physical changes or hormonal imbalances. From birthmarks that are there since birth to age spots, sun spots, skin tags, freckles or moles that appear over your skin as you undergo one of the or many of the above-mentioned reasons.
Usually, blemishes occur due to an infection or inflation on the skin. But, one can consider and keep on eye on other symptoms or signs to detect the growth or occurrence of blemishes. Some these include:
- Pus filled bumps or pimples, mainly around the facial area
- Painful and stretched pustules
- Skin discolorations occurring mainly during winter
- Brown or dark patches appearing on the skin
- Formation of rough patches on the skin
- Dryness or itchiness in the area with a blemish
Make note, not always are these symptoms for blemishes. These symptoms at times could lead to nothing more than brown or dark-colored spots on the skin.
Like we mentioned earlier, the causes for the occurrence of a blemish can range from environmental changes, medication intake, physical changes or simply hormonal changes. Though any of these could lead to blemishes, one of the most common causes for the occurrence of many different kinds of blemishes are hormonal changes or imbalances in the body. At times, our body tends to have an access to certain hormones that lead to the stimulation of the sebaceous glands, causing them to produce an extra amount of oil. This excess oil at times tends to mix with the dead skin cells of the body, resulting in the clogging of pores and hair follicles on the surface of the skin. This causes improper shedding of the dead skin hence, leading to the growth of bacteria within these pores of the skin. Women tend to go through a lot of hormonal changes during their lives, from puberty to adulthood and also during pregnancy and are therefore more prone to the occurrence of blemishes on the skin.
There are various other factors that cane lead to blemishes on the skin other than hormonal changes. Here are some to keep a check on:
- Age: As we grow older, our body stops functioning to its optimum levels. Our body goes through changes and to incorporate these physical changes it tends to get affected by it. Some of these effects can be seen in the form of dark patches or spots in areas of the skin.
- Sun Exposure: The harsh rays of the sun can increase the production of melanin in the body that is the main hormone responsible for skin darkening. The UV rays of the sun can cause dark patches or spots too.

- Cosmetics: Some cosmetics can lead to the blockage of skin pores leading to bacterial growth around pores causing dark spots and patches. The use of certain soaps, deodorants etc. can also lead to blemishes.
- Pollutants: The air around is unfortunately impure and contains a lot of harmful chemicals and gases that can lead to skin damage resulting in the occurrence and formation of blemishes on the skin.
- Skin Conditions: There are many skin related problems that could lead to a blemish. Acne and eczema are two of the most common conditions that lead to skin blemishes.
- Genetic Factors: Simply put, if your parents are prone to skin problems and blemishes then you could be too.
Following a healthy, sanitary routine is the first step to avoid the appearance of blemishes. A good skincare routine can help in avoiding the appearance of blemishes. But in our day-to-day hectic lives, even following these steps at times cannot be enough to avoid blemishes and other skin problems. The starch in potato juice is a bleaching agent that reduces pigmentation.
- Apply the juice of a peeled and grated small potato to your blemishes
- Leave it on for 15-20 minutes and then wash off
- Treat your skin this way daily for a month for best results
2. Fuller’s Earth (Multani Mitti)
Multani mitti, also called Fuller’s Earth, is perfect for exfoliating. Moreover, it absorbs excess oil and also lightens skin.
- Mix two tablespoons of Multani mitti with rose water/ green tea/ cucumber juice/ lemon juice/ plain water to form a smooth paste
- Apply all over your face and neck
- Wash it off after 15 to 20 minutes
- Follow this treatment once or twice a week until you see a difference
3. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera encourages new skin cells growth while healing acne scars and blemishes. Its anti-inflammatory properties also help in preventing acne & acne scars.
- Get fresh aloe gel from a leaf
- If you can’t find any, use extracted gel from the market
- Apply it on your skin and wash off when fully dry
- Treat your skin this way for a month
Cucumber soothes your skin and also works as an astringent while clearing scars and blemishes.
Steps to use cucumber to get blemish free skin:
- Blend half a cup peeled and chopped cucumber and 3 tablespoons of lemon juice
- Apply paste on your skin and keep for 20 minutes
- Wash off with cold water
- Follow daily for a month for best results
5. Banana peel
A banana possesses unique anti-inflammatory properties that reduce inflammation and redness.
- Gently rub the inside of a peel of a ripe banana on the blemished area for 5 to 10 minutes
- You can leave it on without washing
- Repeat 2/3 times daily to see visible results.
